Does TSA PreCheck live up to the hype?

TSA calls TSA PreCheck® a game changer. But is it really worth it? Here we take a look at TSA perks and cost, as well as an alternative for international travelers, so you can decide what’s right for you.

What is TSA PreCheck®?

TSA PreCheck® is a Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Trusted Traveler program that provides faster screening processes for US flights.

Perks:

  • Enter through the TSA PreCheck® lane and skip the lines.
  • Keep your shoes, belts, and light jackets on.
  • No need to unpack liquids or laptops.
  • Have a child under 12? They can join you in the special TSA PreCheck® lane.

Value:

The application fee for TSA PreCheck® is $85 for 5 years and is available at 200 airports and 85+ airlines. The Renewal fee is $70.

Easy online or in-person signup:

If you opt for the online application, you’ll also need to make an appointment.

Once approved, you’ll receive a Known Traveler Number (KTN). By using the KTN when booking flights, you can now enjoy all the TSA PreCheck® perks.

Overall Review:

In October 2022, 91% of TSA PreCheck® passengers waited less than 5 min.

Global Entry

Global Entry is also a DHS Trusted Traveler Program and provides faster screening processes for international travelers entering the US.

If you are an international traveler, you may want to consider Global Entry, which upon approval includes TSA PreCheck® perks. The cost is $100 for 5 years.

Thinking about investing in TSA PreCheck® or Global Entry? Check your credit cards as some will cover the cost of the application fee.
